Soft-tissue periarticular disorders

Soft-tissue periarticular disorders encompass a range of painful conditions of tendons and associated tissue including lateral and medial epicondylitis, Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis (Policeman’s heel), rotator-cuff injuries, and bursitis. There is no universally accepted treatment for most of these conditions, although the principles of management of these conditions are similar to that described previously for musculoskeletal conditions using a combination of medication and physical therapy, and surgery when appropriate. Conventional TENS is administered for soft-tissue periarticular disorders using similar techniques as described for myofascial pain syndrome. Care must be taken not to generate muscle contractions that could cause additional strain on injured tendons and surrounding tissue. TENS elbow and ankle sleeves, and hand and sock electrodes may be beneficial.
